Footnotes anywhere in the content of a WordPress post or page

Footnotes are a convenient way to write blog posts without overwhelming the reader with details that only a few would be interested in.1 I use the WP-Footnotes plugin to easily append footnotes into WordPress.

Some people have called for the ability to embed footnotes anywhere in the post or page. You know me, I try to answer the Bat-Signal when I’m not kicking it with my entourage.

So I implemented a [footnotes] shortcode.2

Footnotes:

  1. I need to take a shower asap. See, you didn’t want to know that. [↩]
  2. Actually, pretty simple fix. [↩]

I synced the Subversion repository at the WordPress.org Plugin Directory, so that I’ll be able to easily merge any upstream changes.

    This is awesome but is there anyway to use a template tag to control where the footnotes appear? Ideally I’d like them to appear in the right sidebar around the level where they are mentioned in the story. Possible?

    Hi, the footnotes appeared where I put them but also at the end still. Is their fix for this problem.

    Could one add an option to the [footnotes] shortcode, which would only display those footnotes inserted up to that point in the post?
    Toggle sections such as on this page would benefit greatly…
